James Madison University’s (JMU) School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management (SHSRM) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the Sport and Recreation Management program at the Assistant Professor level beginning in August 2014.

Faculty members in the SHSRM engage in a wide variety of professional development and scholarly activities to assure that Sport and Recreation Management students receive an exceptional educational experience. The school is a free standing academic unit with sixteen full-time faculty and numerous adjunct faculty serving 500 majors in Hospitality Management and 400 majors in Sport and Recreation Management. Duties and Responsibilities:

The responsibility for this tenure-track position involves a blend of teaching, scholarship and service. The 3-3 teaching load may include courses in human resource management, facility management, programming and assessment, and event management. Additional teaching areas and specific assignments are dependent upon the school’s needs.

Qualifications:

Qualifications include an earned doctorate (ABD may apply) with at least one degree in sport management or a closely related discipline. In addition to the academic preparation, the quality of the institution of higher learning is critical. The successful candidate must have a record of outstanding classroom teaching; a demonstrated ability to connect with undergraduate and graduate students; a willingness to work collaboratively with discipline-specific organizations in the region and a desire to actively participate in students’ experiential learning opportunities. Regarding scholarship, the successful candidate will have a clear research stream and a demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at professional conferences and prepare proposals for funded research. Lastly, professional work experience at the managerial level within the sport industry is preferred.

Philosophically, the ideal candidate must demonstrate that he or she can function as a contributing team member within the School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management and also as an excited colleague to assist the entire school in developing a unique culture of integrated teaching and scholarship that is creative, flexible and innovative.

Job Summary: The University of Southern Mississippi invites applicants for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty position as an assistant professor of recreation in the School of Human Performance and Recreation in the College of Health.This nine-month, entry-level, tenure-track faculty position requires teaching undergraduate courses in recreation, recreation administration and therapeutic recreation, as well as curriculum and program development.
Research, service and undergraduate student advisement are also expected. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Duties and Responsibilities: This tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level involves teaching, advising, curriculum development, student mentoring, service to the university and professional community, and developing and maintaining a research agenda. Successful applicant will demonstrate evidence of teaching and research competence.
Minimum Qualifications: 1) Earned doctorate (awarded by December 2014) in recreation, recreation administration, therapeutic recreation or closely related field
2) Certification (or eligibility for certification) as a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) or a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)
3) Demonstrated potential to produce scholarship, i.e., peer-reviewed publications, professional presentations and proposals for funded research
Preferred Qualifications: 1) Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students and faculty from diverse backgrounds, programs and colleges
2) Professional experience in recreation, recreation administration, community recreation leadership, outdoor recreation or therapeutic recreation
3) Experience in teaching recreation administration and/or therapeutic recreation administration classes at the undergraduate level
4) Experience with program and/or curriculum development
