Position Description:
The Department of Human Performance and Physical Education at Adams State University is looking for an energetic, motivated, and productive individual who is dedicated to diversity and inclusive excellence to assume the position of Assistant Professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology. This is a newly formed position within the department that addresses the growing number of students interested in sport and exercise psychology and related areas.

The responsibilities of this Assistant Professor tenure-track position include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in sport and exercise psychology, measurement and evaluation, methods of coaching, health promotion, research methods, practicum, and other courses as needed. Additional responsibilities include advising, recruiting, providing service to the department, college, and discipline, and engaging undergraduate and graduate students in scholarly activity. The candidate will also have the opportunity to design an online MA in Sport & Exercise Psychology. In this role, the individual will design curriculum, identify instructors, advise students, and conduct program evaluations for the proposed online graduate degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology.

Candidates should possess (a) a commitment to student-centered instruction, (b) a passion for mentoring and teaching a diverse student population, (c) the potential to maintain a research record that is commensurate with level of experience, and (d) a vision for initiating an online graduate program. The successful candidate must have the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with diverse faculty, staff, and students within the HPPE department and across campus. The department offers faculty a mentoring program, professional travel opportunities, and additional teaching stipends.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in the psychosocial/behavioral sciences (Sport and Exercise Psychology) of Kinesiology or closely related area.
  • ABD considered if completion of degree is anticipated within one year.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who possess/demonstrate:
    • Ability to communicate and work effectively with a culturally and ethnically diverse campus population
    • Evidence of or potential for successful teaching in the above mentioned courses
    • Participation in relevant professional organizations
    • Experience with teaching on-line courses
    • A record of scholarly activity and commitment to continued scholarly growth

Departmental and Campus Information:
The HPPE department offers undergraduate degrees in Exercise Science, Sport Management, Sport Psychology, and K-12 Physical Education. Graduate degrees offered include the MS in Exercise Science (on campus), and MA degrees in Coaching (online) and Sport Management (online). HPPE is one of the largest units on campus and has university-wide support to grow programs and further the vision for inclusive excellence.

Located in Alamosa, CO, Adams State University is a small, state-supported Hispanic Serving institution in the San Luis Valley and is a haven for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, camping, rock climbing, skiing, and mountain biking. Alamosa is located approximately 3.5 hours from Denver, 1.5 hours from Taos, NM and 2.5 hours from Santa Fe, NM.
